ReDirect is a conservation
project that seeks to examine
the potential for Payments for
Environmental Services (PES)
to achieve both conservation
and development objectives in
the Nyungwe National Park,
Rwanda.
ReDirect
Reconciling Biodiversity and Development through Direct Payments for Conservation
We work in 8 Cells (shown in blue and pink) adjacent to the
Park.
Cells are the second smallest administrative unit in Rwanda
and typically contain between 500-1800 households.
There is presently a paucity of empirical research into the field realities of
PES schemes in developing countries, in particular Africa, and those studies
that do exist have not been designed in ways that enable rigorous monitoring
of outcomes.

ReDirect seeks to narrow the gap of empirical research and better understand
the dynamics of a PES intervention in a low-income, high biodiversity setting.
It will provide policy relevant research for Rwanda which may also be of
global relevance and importance, helping to promote and secure Rwanda’s
position at the vanguard of innovative conservation practice.
